Data sources remote sensing

Continue a series of articles about GIS technology. Today we will talk about data sources remote sensing images from satellites, which are freely available on the Internet

One of the sources was already discussed in a previous article, "let's Talk about GIS"zulu.ssc.nasa.gov/mrsid/mrsid.pl, so I will not repeat. This source is fairly simple and intuitive to use a resource that provides imagery from the American Landsat satellites.

Images of these satellites provides a resource Global Land Cover Facility.

When entering the site we see a fairly simple design with such an important Data Download button in the upper right part of website

Having considered the site and its content, push a button. Unfortunately, at the time of writing, this useful resource section to open refused, but the fact that it works (though with interruptions) — that's right, just yesterday it was visited. Will try to come back later and try your luck. But now over to other useful sites.

In my next article will Modis Rapid Response System displaying the dangerous natural phenomena, captured another American satellites Modis. At the time of this writing you can see here's the Central African region. Red dots represent not that other, as the fire:

The image on the right is the Gulf of Ob. On the part covered by the territory is also possible to observe the fires.

In the gallery you can also find pictures showing other natural phenomena — in addition to the fires appear to hurricanes, tropical storms, typhoons, smoke, sandstorms... it's not listed. There is a possibility to choose a specific date (up to April 2001) and see which effects were observed at one time or another on Earth.

The primary Modis data is presented on http://eostation.scanex.ru/data/calendar.html. Choosing the date and one of the links you will get a list of available layers — almost all video format .hdf (Hierarchical Data Format), which, unfortunately, is not a good format

After waiting some time yet failed attempt to visit the site GLCF. If You will suffer the same luck, immediately press the Map Search. You can see the following interface:

Then click on the map for as long as the frame of the card will not cover the required area. Do not forget to place a tick in the left menu (by selecting the desired items), press the select key window:

In that case, if the coverage is too big, or just in this area there are no pictures from the selected groups will see similar to the following

In the first case we see the inscription of 179 images in selection, while there is a link to download the data. In the second case, nothing like this is observed, there is only the inscription No images in selection.

Once satisfied, click on the link to Preview & Download. We were sent to a menu with a list of found data, a thumbnail picture in the upper left part and covered by the territory on the map in the upper right part:

Clicking on the ID of a menu item we have updated previews and coverage. Selecting the most suitable photo, click on Info for more information and to Download to retrieve a list of files to download

Next, consider a pair of resources a slightly different direction — data radar topographic mapping of the Earth

Opens this section of the resource http://edc.usgs.gov/products/elevation/gtopo30/gtopo30.html. Here everything is simple and intuitive — click on the desired section of the map, get a preview with a link in the text (the link as E020N90) is the link archive a series of files (formats of the data provided — a conversation worthy of a separate article):

information about relief is the resource http://www2.jpl.nasa.gov/. In the Gallery of Images there is a list available for download territories. Selecting, for example, France, we will immediately move to the page with a small thumbnail image and prompt you to download the image in high resolution tiff format (for France, this tiff weighs 216 MB). You can click on the link to View the France Image Gallery, and then on another link (for France, this is the link to just one, for California — about 15-20), we will move to the photo journal NASA (photojournal), where in addition .tiff file can be downloaded .jpeg. Here is a preview image for France:

The main task is the mapping of the topography of a particular site. The pictures make the terrain very detailed, verbose information.

I would not like to ignore online map http://geofuse.geoeye.com/maps/Map.aspx. GeoEye allows with sufficient approximation to overlay images on Google map. Clicking Search by current extent, the left menu will appear with a series of images that fall on this area. Clicking the show all images button above the list or by clicking on the appropriate icon next to the desired images, they instantly appear on the map:

I will mention a few resources: weather Pictures, where at any time you can view the latest information about the state of cloudiness. Base is constantly updated, on the website there is a time for the next series of shots. In the animation available to flash, showing movement of clouds over the selected time period.

The second resource, and the last in the Kosmosnimki. The entire site, as the previous one, in Russian, so to understand it will not be easy. An example of the image with this resource:

Naturally, in this article, not all resources, but perhaps from well known and most useful is a big part. Unaffected left web services that offer a mosaic of images with high and very high resolution is known to all program GoogleEarth (Google Earth) and analog from NASA — WorldWind. If this topic is interesting to readers, perhaps, will review WorldWind (creation Google does not require the submission) to one of the following articles.
