Today I want to talk about some of the ways of promoting free and how to make them more efficient. And to do that I'm going on the example of one of my apps: Contact HD Widgets. It has been tested all below described approaches advance.

My name is Dmitry Makeev and at the moment I work Android developer at Ciklum.

Since then, as I was, even back in 2011, began his career as an Android programmer, I became interested in the possibility of creating their own projects and earnings on them. At the moment, I have 3 active projects in development and promotion of which I understood some of the nuances and pitfalls of free floating, which I will explain later in this and subsequent articles.
From my previous publications, I want to recommend an article entitled "As I haven't slept in a year, or create a social Android app" in which I described my first experience of promotion of their own product.

let's Start with the free methods of promotion:


1) Contact tops: top paid, top free, best sellers, new paid, new free... the top List for different countries are not the same. 3) Forums: creating themes, answers to users ' questions. For me, the forum is a convenient way for quick and effective communication with users for operational implementation of new functionality and bug fixes of the application.
4) Related sites - mailing with a request to do a review. The effectiveness of this method depends on many factors, such as: interesting ideas and implement the application, of the availability of the text of the review, the desire and mood of the administration. However it's worth a try.
5) Advertising in other apps, cross promotion. All of the services the General principle is the same: "the more impressions a foreign advertising you do, the more you show ads in your app". Advertise in your app effective and not annoying.
At the moment the most common are the following services: TapJoy, ChartBoost, AppFlood, TapForTap
6) Social network: Facebook, Vkontakte, Google+, YouTube, and Twitter.
The main advantage of social networking is the ease in spreading information among friends, colleagues, relatives have a certain level of trust.br> Banner advertising in the social. networks, as practice shows, are ineffective and costly.
Usually social. network offer for each project create a separate group (page). I believe that it is better to use and promote your personal page as a person and developer. In the case above not only the confidence and responsiveness of users, but also the desire to join the group (to add you to friends).
To attract attention outside of your page you can use the posts open in other Android communities. The main thing to be careful not to violate their rules.

Increase efficiency:


1) Translate application to more languages. Usually I translate the description on Google Play: English, Arabic, Dutch, Greek, Danish, Hebrew, Spanish, Italian, Chinese, Korean, German, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Turkish, Ukrainian, French, Hindi, Czech, Swedish, Japanese.
Comfortable and useful was the button "Help with translation into mother tongue" by clicking on that app's creators will receive a letter indicating the language in which the user is willing to help translate the app. After that, the user sends a file for translation. So, the efforts of the users, the app has been translated into German, French and Italian.
2) Make of new updates and improvements as often as possible. I recommend doing this every 5 days. During this time most of the bugs will appear, but the app still will not have time to forget. After installing the app, Your main goal is to keep the user.
3) Bring Google Play store in a presentable appearance.
The icon should be clear and understandable and to stand out from the crowd.
The first two sentences of the description should convince the prospective user that's exactly what he was looking for. The description should be easy to read and to be beautifully decorated, highlighting key points in bold.
A demo video is also required. I believe that the main purpose of the video is to intrigue the user, to show him something unusual, unexpected. If you get it, then consider that the installation in your pocket.
4) Keep rating this app no lower than a 3.8. Applications with lower ranking usually ignored by users as unfinished or not working. To improve rankings usually are not free services. This is an average cost of$ 0.5 — $ 2 for a single rating and a positive review.
5) Pay high attention and constructive comments and criticism users in Google Play, forums, SOC. networks. Communicate with their users.

Used promotion options:


1) Google Play Page given to the worthy mind. Optimized for the search.
2) Added ad banner in a previous application a similar subject.
3) Created themes on the four most popular forums.
4) Sent out letters to all known domestic and foreign editors.
5) Each update is accompanied by a post in the SOC. networks.
6) Placed the posts in the similar topics, the groups.

Results:


1) Top 25 new free in the category "Widgets". Thanks to this position, almost the entire month, the application received by 300-500 units. The second of April the app was missing from this top, which greatly affect the schedule of installations.
2) 930$ — income per month.

Tips:


1) the closest possible to communicate with users in the initial stages.
2) Tell me about the application wherever possible.
3) Release the updates more often.
4) the Application must be ready 100%
5) Conduct final testing of the application with the people who really need it.

Future goals:


1) Find the output for Chinese and Japanese audiences.
2) Increase the income of up to$ 2,000 per month.
