RTLS, GPS and video surveillance. Instead of or together?
to Discover, to position (locate) and identify...
This is important not only at capture of the intruder. To know the location of a particular object – person, vehicle, cargo, a specific subject is also required for effective management, prevention of emergencies and elimination of their consequences, even when carrying out routine operations such as inventory, (for example, when the transmission shifts).
Unfortunately, unlike PCs, where information about the options process quickly and accurately determined by the control and measuring equipment, positioning and identification of moving targets in most cases cannot be performed without human intervention and human error is voluntary or involuntary. Whether a girl with a scanner in a warehouse or security guard in front of a dozen other monitors the influence of human factor is inevitable. But as the intensification and increase of scale of production, the price of possible mistakes is becoming higher.
Therefore, automatic identification and positioning of moving objects without human intervention is becoming an increasingly urgent task.
Possible solutions will be discussed in this topic.
Now for detection, positioning and identification of the most commonly used GPS (mainly for vehicle monitoring), video surveillance, and in recent years more and positioning system in real – time RTLS. However, each of these systems has its limitations.
Satellite navigation systems (GPS, GLONASS) provide positioning and identification on large areas, but do not work indoors and require that a controlled object has been provided with a device with a unique code (essentially a label).
surveillance Systems find and accompany a variety of purposes, indicate possible violations, but is unable to reliably identify (recognize) the object of observation. Especially in cases where the object of interest should be distinguished from the many similar (find the intruder among the many "its").
RTLS are used for different purposes in a variety of applications, allowing to control the location and movement of objects and reliably to identify them, both outside and indoors. But controlled objects, as in the case of GPS, should be labeled, but not labeled, the system "sees".
It turns out that none of these systems can not solve fully the task. The solution is to make joint use of these systems. Such integration opens opportunities not available to the system separately.

end-to-end monitoring of the vehicle fleet
Integration of satellite navigation (GLONASS, GPS) and RTLS allows you to control the movement of vehicles not only in open space, with a clear view of the satellites, but with the help of RTLS and indoor courtyards, buildings, structures. In the automated system of transport control and/or logistics will receive data about routes, speed and delays of transportation and/or cargo, but also of the time and place of loading/unloading, maintenance and repairs, downtime waiting for service.
Automatic detection and alarm about the penetration of outsiders
In the case of joint use of the IP system of video observation and RTLS opportunity to compare data from RTLS identification and positioning controlled by ("their") data object CCTV. For example, if the motion sensor video system detects a new object, and RTLS does not fix such a facility in this sector, the system will give a signal to the guards about the possible infiltration of a stranger, while on the panel will be given a picture of the offender and provided his location.
Using RTLS and inexpensive video camera at entrances to protected areas, can automatically be routed to the access control system and/or remotely displayed on the operator panel is located in front of the camera and its picture of the registration card. Comparison of the images and the authentication can produce automated access control system or (cheaper option) a security officer. In the second case a few checkpoints can remotely be operated by one controller. This method is more reliable than the tolerance on the cards, and cheaper than facial recognition biometrics (retina, fingerprint).
Autonomous automated control
The combination of the two previous options sharing video and RTLS allows you to organize automated control of remote objects or separate premises, buildings, constructions without the direct presence of security officers – managers, security guards, watchmen, etc.
I have listed just a few of the most obvious choices for the joint use of satellite navigation systems, surveillance systems and positioning systems in real-time. Specific solutions will depend on the tasks performed in a particular application (in particular, one of such decisions in the energy sector mentioned in publications).
But in any case, the joint use of fundamentally different systems of detection, localization, identification and monitoring allows you to make the next step on the path reduction of influence of human factor in obtaining and entering the data in SAS in the field, where previously it was not achievable.
All in the hands of developers of automated systems.
